Every Brilliant Thing by Duncan Macmillan

September 5-7

Every Brilliant Thing centers on a narrator who, at the age of seven, begins making a list of “every brilliant thing” worth living for after their mother’s first suicide attempt. The list starts with simple joys—like ice cream and staying up past your bedtime—and grows over time, capturing the beauty in life’s smallest pleasures.

As the narrator grows up, the list becomes a coping mechanism, a love letter to life, and a lens through which they try to understand their mother’s struggles, their own mental health, and the nature of hope.

Every Brilliant Thing is a poignant and uplifting one-person play by Duncan Macmillan, often in collaboration with performer Jonny Donahoe. The play explores the topic of mental health, depression, and suicide through a deeply personal yet universally resonant narrative.

The play will be performed in an intimate in-the-round setting, and involves audience participation. All participation is optional. The production may be enjoyed with or without directly participating.

Please note that Every Brilliant Thing discusses the topic of suicide. Actors Theatre at the ARTfactory is committed to the safety and well-being of our patrons.
